Safety Around You

From small towns to our downtown areas, the Carolina Core communities are actively working to build safe areas for everyone to enjoy. Some communities have programs for youth, like Safety Town of Greensboro. This program teaches children safety lessons about strangers, traffic, pedestrians, fire, bicycles and more. By sharing these safety lessons at a young age, the children within our communities learn how to keep themselves, and others, safe within the Carolina Core community, and parents and caregivers can have peace of mind knowing that their children are being equipped with the knowledge to make smart decisions in potentially dangerous situations.

The High Point Community Against Violence organization is a 501(c)(3) that assists, alongside local law enforcement, in efforts to reduce violent crime rates and property crime rates within the community. By fostering strong relationships between residents and law enforcement officials, the organization creates a collaborative approach to making High Point a safer place for all. This program not only addresses immediate concerns but also works toward long-term solutions that prevent crime before it happens.

Beyond organized programs, there are also accessible safety tools for community members to use, like the High Point Police Department’s helpful crime report resources. These resources provide residents with up-to-date information on crime statistics, prevention methods and ways to get involved in neighborhood safety initiatives.

One particularly valuable tool is the community crime mapping system, which uses reported crimes to illustrate trends within the Carolina Core neighborhoods. This interactive tool allows residents to see exactly what is happening in their communities, helping them take proactive measures to enhance home security efforts.

The Carolina Core has is home to some of the safest areas in the state. Not only is North Carolina safety ranked highly in the U.S., but we also have many safe and vibrant communities with low crime rates. Take Pinehurst, North Carolina, for example. It has seen a decline in violent crime and a decline in property crime, with its crime rate now being 6.9 times lower than the national average of the United States, and in 2023, its overall crime rate fell by 16% compared to 2022.

Lexington had a decrease in vehicle thefts in 2023, bringing their auto crime rate below the national average. Low North Carolina crime rates and our safe cities are what make the Core such a great place to call home.

The Carolina Core region is also home to highly trained first responders who are prepared to assist in any critical situation. Fire departments in Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem are equipped to provide fire safety support, protecting communities with rapid response and expert care.

Additionally, the Carolina Core is also a hub for exceptional healthcare, with some of the best hospitals in the state providing advanced medical services and patient care. Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital is the largest and most comprehensive medical center in the five-county region, serving Greensboro and beyond with expert healthcare.

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist offers specialized pediatric care, including cardiology, immunology and neurology, ensuring that families have access to quality treatment close to home.
